A Key Milestone for Vitiligo Advocacy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
On 11 January 2026, the Congolese Vitiligo Association (ACV) brought together its founding members for a pivotal meeting, marking an important step forward in the organisation’s formal development within the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
This gathering represents meaningful progress in strengthening structured, patient-led advocacy in a context where vitiligo remains widely misunderstood and stigmatised.
Building a Shared Vision and Strategic Direction
The meeting focused on establishing a common vision, identifying initial strategic priorities, and reinforcing collective commitment around awareness, advocacy, and support for people living with vitiligo.
Founding members demonstrated strong alignment and motivation to work collaboratively, laying the groundwork for a coordinated and sustainable approach to advocacy and community engagement at the national level.
Aligning with International Best Practices
Participants expressed a clear intention to align ACV’s future actions with international best practices, recognising VIPOC’s global leadership as an important reference point for guiding and strengthening national initiatives.
This alignment reflects ACV’s ambition to position itself as a credible, well-governed organisation that contributes meaningfully to the broader global vitiligo advocacy ecosystem.
Strengthened by Long-Term International Support
This progress also builds on the long-standing support of the French Vitiligo Association (AFV), which has, for several years, contributed to the development of vitiligo support groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
AFV’s continued engagement has played a valuable role in strengthening local community structures, capacity-building efforts, and sustained patient mobilisation.
Looking Ahead: Collaboration and Continued Growth
VIPOC warmly welcomes this important development and looks forward to continued exchange, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing with ACV as its governance structures and strategic roadmap continue to take shape.
This milestone reflects not only organisational growth but also the expanding reach and impact of vitiligo advocacy across regions, driven by shared values, collective leadership, and a commitment to lasting change.
